THE DESIGN TASK

You are to design the arrangement of furniture, fixtures and fittings of a typical detached house. The house has two floors with the dining room, kitchen and lounge downstairs. Bedrooms and bathroom upstairs.
The sample key (below) shows how a variety of furniture, fixtures and fittings look as a plan view (birds eye view). You can use examples from the key or develop your own designs. Think carefully about the style of furniture, fixtures and fittings.
Keep in mind, that there are certain pieces of furniture, fixtures and fittings that are essential in any house.

DESIGNING YOUR OWN KEY FOR AN ARCHITECTURAL LAYOUT

When populating a room with furniture and fittings, it is important to keep the design of individual items simple. An over complicated design takes too long to draw, if the layout is hand-drawn. However, if the room layout is drawn on a computer, it may be worth spending time on the design of the furniture and fittings, because once drawn, they can be copied repeatedly.
One effective technique, is to search the internet for the furniture and fittings you want to include in your layout and then draw a simplified ‘plan view’ of each one. Some examples are shown below.

It is also a good idea to keep colour / shade to the minimum. Shading / colouring sometimes detracts from the overall layout, especially if the layout is an early design, that will be developed at a later date.
Adding a little detail can be helpful. For example the architectural view of the coffee table (shown above) includes coffee cups and a basic drawing of an open magazine. The bathroom sink has two taps and a plug hole. This small detail makes the items easier to identify. When converting a photograph of a piece of furniture / fitting, you do not need to draw an exact copy. Reduce the complexity of the original design.
