You are to design a small modular home, suitable for two people. It can be regarded as a ‘starter home’, the first affordable home that a typical person / couple purchases. Your design must be open plan, with potential use of partitions to isolate areas of floor space (for example, the sleeping area). Your ‘home’ should have all the essential fixtures and fittings. The building must be constructed sustainably and be environmentally friendly. A parking space and a garden / area of relaxation, are also essential.

YOU WILL START WITH AN ARCHITECTURAL PICTORIAL VIEW

WHAT IS A MODULAR HOME?

A modular home is constructed in a factory, transported to its location and assembled on prepared foundations. This type of home is manufactured in sections or modules, that are pieced together to form living space / accommodation. The modular design allows for a measure of customisation / individuality by the customer. Modular homes are generally faster to build and cheaper than traditional homes.

WHAT IS A SUSTAINABLE BUILDING?

A sustainable building (a green building), is a building that has been designed with careful consideration of its impact on the natural environment and the potential, positive affects on the health of its residents. Factors to be considered include:
The efficient use of energy, including energy conservation and insulation. This includes the installation of solar / wind power, which reduces the use of energy generated from fossil fuels. The use of recycled and reclaimed materials, reducing the carbon footprint of the building. The use of materials that are non-toxic and ethically and sustainably sourced. Water conservation, which can include rain water harvesting and its use within the home (e.g. the flushing of WCs). The careful and considered layout of space, including outdoor space, promoting the mental and physical health of residents. For example, the benefits of a well designed garden (such as a Japanese Garden).

EXAMPLES

YOU ARE TO START BY DRAWING AN ARCHITECTS PICTORIAL VIEW

An architectural pictorial view, is a ‘realistic’ drawing of a building. It includes colour, shade, images of people and detail. This type of drawing is used early in the design process, as an indication of the design to be developed. It is viewed and discussed by the architect and client. Alterations are then made to the design
