ERGONOMICS AND MEDIA STORAGE
V. Ryan © 2007-2017
My dad has employed a design team to solve the DVD / CD storage problem. Unfortunately he employed the wrong team as they have ignored ergonomic factors. Ergonomics is all about collecting measurements and applying them to a design. The design team have failed to measure the DVDs or CDs or the hands of the people likely to use the storage unit. As a result of ergonomics not being considered, the manufactured storage until is far too small for its purpose - the DVDs do not fit and the shelves are too small for my dad’s large hands. |
The design team should have collected a range of measurements/sizes of hands and fingers and the sizes of DVD and CD cases. The design and size of the storage should be based on these ‘ergonomic’ measurements. This is likely to ensure that it is the correct size for its function / purpose. The diagrams opposite display some of the important measurements that need collecting. |
Look at the following exercises regarding sizes /
dimensions of DVD cases. These measurements must be determined before a
suitable storage can be designed. |
CDs / DVDs are used to store different types of data / information such as music, recordings, computer files, photos, video clips and even full length feature length films. They are all the same physical size and usually the same shape. |
1. On the picture of the CD / DVD write the measurement of the diameter and radius, in millimetres - on the dimensions.
3. Opposite is a typical CD case. Measure the A, B and C dimensions (measurements), in millimetres. Write them alongside the picture.

9. In the space below list some of the problems associated with the storage of CDs / DVDs. |
