2a. A design agency has designed a cartoon character to encourage pupils / students to wear goggles when using machines. The agency has developed a character called ‘Safe Ed”. The diagram shown below shows the cartoons head. The design company intends to design a device that moves the Ed’s head up and down.
The basic layout is shown below. The mechanism is contained within a box (shown as a dotted line). When a handle is pressed Ed’s head moves upwards and then returns to its original position. Complete the mechanism and explain how it works.
   

EXPLANATION:  
As the handle is pushed down the arm rotates slowly. The pad pushes the rod upwards and consequently the head moves as well. When the handle is released the return spring pushes the pad down and the handle returns to its original position.
   
2b.What material could be used to make the mechanism.
Cast Aluminium
   
2c. Explain your choice of material.

Aluminium is a light, soft metal. It can be cast to a rough shape and then machined or finished by hand to a accurate shape. It is strong and is unlikely to break even if the handle/arm is pushed downwards with great force.
