A square pyramid is shown below. This is a shape occasionally used as packaging. |
Below a net /
development of a square pyramid. The development gets its name from the
square base. Tabs are positioned around the base and on the leading edge
so that when the development is folded it can be glued in position. Can
you name any products that have this type of products? Make the pyramid development. |
The square pyramid development is an efficient shape to store in a cardboard box. Very little space is left between the individual pyramids. The square pyramids fit head to tail creating a strong structure. When in their cardboard box they form a strong unit, able to withstand drops and knocks. |
When being transported
in a lorry or transit van the ‘cuboid’ cardboard boxes can be stacked and
handled easily. The cuboid boxes can be arranged in the lorry / van so
that very little space is left. The diagram below shows how the boxes could be arranged efficiently. This means that many of the individual square pyramid packages, possibly thousands, could be transported in one journey. This would lower delivery costs, compared to many other packaging designs. |
