| The diagram below shows a typical ink pen, disassembled. All the parts are on display, but it would take some time to work out, how to put the pen back together. Although it is helpful to have a drawing like this, an improved drawing would be one that clearly shows how the parts slot together. The answer is an exploded drawing. |

| The drawing below, is an accurate ‘Exploded Drawing’. This drawing starts with a horizontal centre line. Each component is drawn along the centre line, in a disassembled position and in order / sequence. To assemble the pen, each component slides along the centre line, to its place as part of the assembled pen. |

| SEMI-TRANSPARENT VIEW |
| All the components / parts can be seen through the semi-transparent pen casing (the barrel), in their correct positions, forming the working ball point pen. Semi-transparent views are very useful when designing and when explaining how a product works. |

| REAL-WORLD VIEW |
| This is how the pen looks. The casing (barrel) is opaque, which means the internal parts /components, cannnot be seen. |
