THE HYDROGEN POWERED CAR

V. Ryan © 2006

Hydrogen is a volatile gas - it burns with explosive force. This makes it very useful as a fuel. Modern cars use petrol or diesel as fuel but each one pollutes the atmosphere. However, hydrogen powered cars produce water as waste, it is non-polluting. Hydrogen is looked upon as a future fuel for all vehicles and this suggestion has been put forward by both scientists and environmentalist.

Look at the example styles of writing and symbols shown below. Each style has been developed to give an impression of hydrogen as a gas, or an environmentally friendly fuel or even a powerful fuel.

1. This example style / symbol has been designed to stress the fact that hydrogen is a gas. The bubbles suggest that hydrogen is ‘bubbly’ and that it will float upwards. It is a friendly style.

2. This style / symbol has been designed to give the impression that hydrogen is ‘volatile’ and that it burns powerfully. The green suggests that it is also environmentally friendly.

3. This style / symbol emphasises hydrogen as a ‘green’ fuel, environmentally friendly. The green colours/shades and the sun in the background suggests clean, natural, green energy.

4. The style / symbol shown here emphasises the power of hydrogen as a fuel. The athlete is part of the symbol to give the fuel a sporty, active image.

Look at the way two of the styles / symbols shown above have been applied to the car bodywork. Design your own style / symbol representing hydrogen as an environmentally friendly fuel and apply it to the third drawing. Add notes explaining what your thoughts are regarding each design.
