STAGES - DESIGNING A PICTORIAL LICENSE PLATE

V. Ryan © 2006

The license / number plate seen below has been designed for a car that is environmentally friendly. An electric car, solar powered car or an hydrogen powered car would fit this description. The lettering is in green reflecting the term ‘green issues’ or ‘environment’. The grass and plants have been added to enhance the number plate and to make it more interesting to look at.

1. The outline of the number plate is drawn in pencil using drawing equipment including a T-square and set square.

2. A second line is drawn inside the first one. This produces a border , the outside limit of the license / number plate.

3. Then a fine black felt en is used to go round the two sets of line, producing a pair of bold lines.
4. A broad or brush black felt pen is then used to fill the space between each line.

5. Select a style of writing / print /font. Draw the outline of each letter faintly using a pencil. Draw the top and bottom guidelines first as these will ensure that each letter is the same size.

6. Use a fine green pen to draw round each letter.

7. Use a broad green felt pen to fill each letter with colour. This will make the letters stand out. Also, the letters will be accurately finished.

8. Add the pictorial part of the license /number plate. This can be done using felt pens and coloured pencils. This will add ‘quality’ to the final design.
