MODERN COMMEMORATIVE STAMP DESIGNS
V. Ryan © 2006
Commemorative stamps often display well known and even famous landmarks. The French stamp shown below shows one of the best known structures in the world, the Eiffel Tower. Structures such as this are usually presented in a simplified way. The detailed, complex original picture of the Eiffel Tower (left) has been converted to a simple ‘cartoon’ representation. This is then added to the stamp with a few additions. The background is kept simple, with little detail. This artistic approach is popular in the design of commemorative stamps. |

The same artistic technique can be applied to almost any type of drawing. The igloo to the left is the original drawing. On the right is a simplified version. The igloo is still recognisable but is drawn in a modern style. | ||||
On the left is a relatively complex drawing of a
typical lighthouse. Draw a simplified version in the space on the
right. |
