The Manufacturing Specification is an alternative to producing separate sheets for the manufacturing flow chart, sequence drawing and final 3D drawing. It is a concise sheet, which summaries each of these design sheets.

When creating this sheet, check everything you write and draw against the specification you wrote earlier in the project, after the research section.

The Manufacturing Specification sheet is normally split into sub-sections.

SCALE OF PRODUCTION AND
THE MANUFACTURE OF MY PRODUCT

Manuafacturing Specification
Describe how you have considered the way that your product will be manufactured in a factory. For example, if it is designed for a production line, standard components such as counter sunk screws, panel pins, nuts, bolts, glues and other pre-bought parts will be assembled along with the parts you intend to manufacture. All this will keep costs down.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

manufacturing specification
Describe the product you have designed. This should be a summary. You should explain aspects of the design such as its basic functions, if the design has been influenced by a design movement and environmental considerations. You may want to refer to points in your original written specification.

QUALITY ASSURANCE/ CONTROL
AND MY PRODUCT

Manufacturing Specification
Describe the system you have set up for checking the quality of manufacturing, for your product. This may start with checking materials as they enter the workshop, so that imperfections are identified. Checks carried out during each stage of manufacturing should also be summarised.

STANDARD COMPONENTS TO BE
USED DURING MANUFACTURING

Manufacturing Specification
Standard components are used in the manufacture of products that require a variety of parts. Screws, nails, electronic components and even complete circuits, can be regarded as standard components. The cost of production is kept down by purchasing standard components from other manufacturers. Also, manufacturing a product is faster using standard components. Include images of the parts you intend to use.

FINAL IDEA

Manufacturing Specification
Draw the final design, as either a 2D or 3D presentation. This should be a clear drawing and consider colour rendering.

ASSEMBLY AND CONSTRUCTION

Manufacturing Specification
Describe how the product will be manufactured. Often this sub-section is completed by presenting an exploded drawing, showing all the parts disassembled.
Simple notes explaining how the way the parts go together should be included.
