FURTHER QUESTIONS / EXERCISES - ENERGY PRODUCTION

V. Ryan © 2005 - 2009

Below are a number of questions relating to ‘alternative energy’ and its practical use. You are to draw a diagram and add notes explaining your answer, for each situation. Simple clear diagrams are required but in each case justify using your choice of alternative energy.

1. A small farm in a third world country requires power to deliver water for the irrigation of a few acres of land. Water and man/animal power are in short supply. Water in the area is from a small stream and a well situated a short distance from the land. Explain with notes and diagrams a possible energy source that could be used to solve this problem.

2. The world is facing a serious problem regarding the supply of energy for its people and industry. A country like Britain (an island) has the financial resources to build a system that will provide a large amount of power from an alternative source. Describe with a diagram(s) and notes such a system and explain any environmental consequences.

3. In the Third World communications are very expensive especially for people in remote areas. This is partly due to a lack of electrical power as it is very expensive to lay electrical cables, hundreds of miles to outlying villages/towns. Explain a source of power/energy that could be used to produce enough electricity to power a radio telephone.

4. A large town located in a mountainous area (Northern Europe) has a power problem. During bad weather, especially when it snows, the power cables (which are linked to the main district power plant, one hundred miles away) tend to collapse. The EEC have given the town a grant to build their own source of electrical power. Describe a system that could be constructed to resolve this energy problem. Use a diagram and notes.
