9. Fine petrabond Casting sand is then shaken through a
sieve (called riddled sand) so that only fine fall into the box. |

10. Using hand pressure, sand is pressed carefully into
all four corners of the box. Do not compress the sand too much. It must
still be possible to press the shape of a pattern into the sand. |

11. A steel flat bar can be used to level (strickle
off) the sand so that it is level with the sides of the box. |

12. The pattern, in this case a letter, is pressed into
the sand using the steel bar. If a magnetic letter is used as the pattern,
the letter sticks to the bar making it easier to place. |

13. Further fine sand is built up over the pattern.
This fills any gaps made as the pattern is pressed into the sand. |

14. Excess sand is removed again with the steel bar (strickling
bar). |
