V. Ryan © 2008-2017

A digipack is a CD or DVD case composed of a polystyrene or polyethylene CD tray glued inside a cardboard cover. They are considered environmentally friendly compared to plastic jewel or even slim jewel cases. Any cardboard based CD-ROM/DVD case is referred to as a digipack.

They come in two main forms. One is manufactured for CD ROMs whilst the other, seen below, is slightly larger and can be used for DVDs.

The card used for this type of case is generally FSC approved with the polyethylene/polystyrene being recycled. A disadvantage of this type of case is that they are not particularly strong and cannot stand up to rough treatment.

1. List reasons why this type of CD/DVD case is environmentally friendly compared to traditional jewel cases.
2. What symbols would you expect to see on this type of CD/DVD case that reflect its environmentally friendly image?
3. Explain with the aid of diagrams and notes, how card and polyethylene are recycled.
4. In your opinion is it cost effective to recycle card, paper and plastics?
5. Why is it important that the general public take recycling seriously?
6. Sketch a diagram to reflect the product life cycle of a digipack CD / DVD case. Add explanatory notes.

7. Explain how you think that this product could be made even more environmentally friendly.
