EDUCATIONAL JIGSAW - 1

V. Ryan © 2006 - 2009

The educational toy seen below is a jigsaw based on a snake. The shape of the snake has been cut accurately into pieces and letters applied. This adds further appeal to children and their parents.

STAGES OF MANUFACTURE

MDF is chosen as the material for the jigsaw because it cuts and shapes relatively easily and paint can be applied giving a smooth finish.

The MDF is marked out using a pencil and a card template. A template is made so that the snake shape can be drawn many times on different pieces of MDF. This means that the toy can be mass produced (many can be made and they are all the same size).

A hole is drilled near the edge of the MDF and just inside the shape of the snake. The hole is drilled by hand or on the drilling machine.

A fretsaw is used to cutout the snake shape. First the blade is released from the fretsaw and pushed through the hole in the MDF. It is then fixed back in the fretsaw and the shape cut.

The snake shape can then be removed. Fretsaw blades are so fine that there is only a slight gap between the snake shape and the hole it is taken from.
