Transition Spectacles / lenses
1c. List three reasons for using the smart material you have named, in the product you have described.

Photochromic ink darkens, as the light level increases. Some photochromic inks change colour. In fact, it is UV light that causes the darkening of the ink, which means the ink works best in natural light. This special ink has two main applications; sunglasses and spectacles.

Using modern manufacturing technology, it is possible to heat the polycarbonate lenses, so that the photochromic ink is absorbed by the surface layer. This technology is cost effective, making transition lenses affordable to the general public.

Photochromic ink reacts quickly to changes in UV light levels, darkening quickly in natural sunlight. The ink provides the appropriate amount of shade, according to the brightness of the sun / natural light.
