Why is Luwig Mies van der Rohe regarded as an influential designer ?

Ludwig Miles van der Rohe can be regarded as an influential designer and innovative modernist architect. He believed in simplistic and yet stylish architecture, built with modern materials such as steel supporting frames and glass. He pioneered the open floor style of modernism. His approach to architectural design, challenged the established traditional, Classical and Gothic styles. He was given the responsibility to design his countries Pavilion (exhibition stand) for the 1929 Barcelona World Fair. He became Director of Architecture, at the renowned Bauhaus in 1930.

Further to this, the furniture he designed was innovative. His ‘Barcelona Chair’ of 1929 (also called the Pavilion Chair) quickly became known as a classic modernist design. Each side frame was manufactured from two pieces of steel welded together. The steel was given a chromed finish. This was a revolutionary design, manufactured with modernist materials, for the modernist movement.

1. Write a specification for a coffee table, designed in the style of the Barcelona chair.

The coffee table will be designed in the style of Ludwig Miles van der Rohe’s Barcelona chair. It will be modernist in style.

It will be manufactured from modernist materials, such as steel with a chromed finish and glass.

The coffee table will be stable as well as being aesthetically pleasing.

The top / table surface, will be easy to ‘wipe’ clean.

2. Draw / sketch a range of initial ideas for the coffee table. Your ideas must meet the specification you have written.

IDEA 1

This table has chrome steel legs, similar in design to the original Barcelona Chair. The translucent glass table top is made up of square panels, matching the leather patch work of the cushions of the Barcelona Chair.

IDEA 2

This design has three ‘semi-circle’ legs. The curved legs are simpler than the Barcelona Chair. The curves are inspired by the ‘curves’ of the Barcelona chair.

This chair has a manufacturing advantage over idea 1. Each leg is manufactured from one piece of steel, avoiding the welding required for idea 1.

IDEA 3

The ellipse shape of the two main side legs are based on the original Barcelona Chair legs, sharing the same radius.
The side legs are accurate circles.
The style still fits that of the Barcelona chair, as the circles and ellipses are manufactured from steel and have a chromed finish. The leather inlay top, matches the pattern on the chair.

IDEA 4

This is an oval ‘topped’ table. The centre of the table top has a square pattern leather insert. The top is designed to give space for cups and small saucers, around the edge.
The legs are based on the shapes found with the Barcelona Chair. The whole table, with the exception of the insert, is manufactured from steel and given a chromed finish.
