SAMPLE ANSWER

The safe use of the thermo-cup is closely linked to ergonomics. Write an evaluation of the thermo-cup, emphasising improvements. Use both notes and diagrams.

The original handle is very smooth. If altered to included finger grips, this would make the thermo-cup easier and safer to hold. The polypropylene handle insulates the user from a hot drink inside the container.

For cooler drinks, the tapered shape of the container is comfortable to hold and it is unlikely to slip from the users hands.

The slide on the top / lid, allows the user to drink safely, without worrying about spillage and possible accidents. However, unless washed carefully, this is the part of the top where dirt is likely to build up.

The base is quite narrow. This means that it could be knocked over quite easily. A wider base would make the thermo-cup more stable. The therm-ocup could be shorter and wider, as a design improvement.

To remove the top/lid, it must be turned anticlockwise. This is not always easy to do. A friction fit top/lid, similar to drink containers for young children, should be considered. This would be easier to open and yet remain ‘water tight’.

The use of thermochromic pigments, on the outside surface of the container, would allow the user to determine how hot the drink is. If the pigment changes to ‘red’, this would alert the user to the possibility that the drink should be allowed to cool a little, before consumed.
