WHAT IS PRODUCT DESIGN? (3)
V. Ryan © 2007

Product Design involves the detailed study of the manufacture of products. This means carefully studying how products are made on traditional equipment such as metal turning lathes and milling machines AND also modern machines such as the one shown below. This is a Rapid Prototyping machine that is able to manufacture an accurate 3D model of a computer design. Models are amazingly detailed.

Single Item Manufacture, Batch Production and Continuous Production are studied. Product Designers must understand the way a product can be made using each of these systems of manufacture.

The manufacture of models and prototypes is an essential aspect of any Product Design course. You will be expected to make and modify prototypes and models using materials such as Styrofoam, foam clad board, MDF and a range of other modelling materials. Sometimes a skilfully made prototype of model will be the final outcome.
