DOMESTIC ABUSE / VIOLENCE - 1

1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men are victims of domestic violence. In the UK, an incident of domestic violence is reported to the Police every minute. Domestic violence sometimes ends in death / murder.

Domestic violence is sometimes called ‘Domestic Abuse’, It includes a wide range of abuse, such as spousal abuse (wife / partner abuse) and abuse within a relationship, in a family, between ‘friends’ and dating couples.

Domestic abuse can involve a husband, wife or partner being violent towards their spouse / partner. It can involve child abuse. In most cases, varying degrees of violence is involved and mental torture.
 
 
 
1. Read the passage above. In your own words, describe what you consider to be domestic violence.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Domestic violence/abuse causes great distress and both physical and mental pain to the victims. It destroys relationships and can easily break up families, damaging family life. Often the Police and Social Agencies become involved. Sometimes this can be too late, as victims are often too scared to report incidents of this type of violence. They may be reluctant to report it, because it could lead to the break up of their family.
 
2. SCENARIO: A wife with two very young children is married to a physically abusive husband. She does not have a job, preferring to looking after the house and especially the children. Her husband drinks alcohol to excess and often assaults her, when intoxicated. What should she do?

Remember - she has little money - despite injuries, no one has witnessed the violence - she fears for the safety of her children. The key phrases may help you answer this question.
