Year 10-11 GRAPHIC PRODUCTS scheme of work.

YEAR: 10-11 SUBJECT: D&T TITLE: GRAPHIC PRODUCTS
OBJECTIVE: The course aims to enable pupils to combine their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding, in order to design and make quality products.

RESOURCES

Model Making. The pupils will manufacture a mock up of their composite drawing, designed earlier. Skills will include; cut/shape/trim/combine materials to accurate sizes; working in a safe manner; Pupils will use a combination of cutting techniques which require cutting by hand and machine. The pupils will be shown a range of modelling materials.

N. Measuring and cutting to size.

L. Production of a sequence drawing relating to every stage of manufacture.

ICT. Production of a 3D computer model using CAD.

HWK. Completion of a drawing and notes representing every stage of manufacture.

Manufacture a second model representing an item such as a pager or mobile phone. MDF

Styrofoam

Drawing and measuring equipment.

Selection of emulsion paints.

The pupils will be given a design brief/need requiring them to design and make a small greetings card. It must incorporate movement including interlocking shapes. (Linkages Etc...)They will be introduced to the scientific principles behind mechanisms, levers and motions - as reflected in existing greetings cards. Basic circuits that produce sound and light for greetings cards and point of sale displays will be introduced. They will design two possible cards. Drawings will show details of movement and how it is achieved. In the physical production of the card scissors, craft knives etc... will be used. They will demonstrate how they could be produced in quantity.

ICT. Investigate slide, ratchet and linkage movements using the internet.

N. Simple scientific principles such as moments of force, will be demonstrated.

L. Pupils to devise the wording for the card. Examples researched from existing cards. Preparation of notes for extension work.

HWK. Research existing cards, research linkages and present findings graphically, complete the final working design.

Disassemble a card with sound and movement. Explain in detail how it works with the aid of diagrams and notes. Drawing and measuring equipment.

Video on mechanisms.

The pupils will be introduced to architectural drawing starting with location maps and site plans. They will be given the outline of a building site and its proposed location and are expected to position a number of houses. Detailed consideration will be given to the type of house, number of houses, the market sector, parking, roads, amenities, environment (trees, grassed areas), position of houses in relation to the sun, etc.... a scaled, plan view will be produced. They will design a detached house constructing scaled plan views of the ground floor. The front view of the building will also be drawn.

N. Scale will be emphasised. Ratios mentioned.

L. Read through website reference material. Discuss requirements for a house and living space.

ICT. Internet research, construction of a plan using graphics software.

C. Discuss with pupils the ‘right’ everyone has to decent living conditions.

HWK. Research regarding plans, rough ideas with notes, finished plan views.

Draw to scale a plan view of the upper floor of a detached house. Select a ‘run down’ area are put forward proposals for renovations. Drawing and measuring equipment..

Graphics software.
