Year 8 DESK TIDY - project

YEAR: 8 SUBJECT: D&T TITLE: DESK TIDY
OBJECTIVE: The pupils will be introduced again to the full design process. They will also be presented with a limited number of materials in order to encourage them to think carefully about possible solutions.

RESOURCES

Stage Four: The need for an comprehensive analysis will be discussed. The pupils will be encouraged to describe what the analysis actually is and to develop questions. These will be roughly worked out and discussed amongst the class.

1. What equipment is needed for the completion of homework?

2. On what type of working surface is the unit likely to be placed?

3. How many items will the unit hold?

4. What materials are available?

5. What will the overall dimensions be?

6. What safety factors need to be taken into account? etc..…

The pupils will present the analysis on a design sheet with a standard border line and title block. they will be allowed to use a individual style of writing for the main title.

L. Discussion of analysis points. Pupils write down questions individually and read out to the class.

N. Limit set on number of individual items and maximum and minimum measurements for equipment given.

ICT. Pupils take turns to research desk tidy / storage units using the internet and report back to the class.

HWK. Complete Analysis points and present in a graphical manner.

Pupils to rank in order the importance of equipment they intend to store. Drawing / writing equipment.

Internet access.

Stage Five: The pupils will research all the items that are likely to be used and create a table of statistics (measurements of items) for use in further design work. The table will be drawn as part of the research section for the project. All the equipment for the unit will also be drawn with notes placed alongside explaining how each could be contained in the unit. (See Additional Data Collection Sheet).

The pupils will also compose a spreadsheet of the data. They will be introduced to appropriate techniques to enable them to set out the data, use the ‘sum’ command and carryout basic formatting.

N. Pupils measure items and work out average/mean statistics, presenting them in a table.

L. Explanation of nature and type of notes to be placed alongside the drawing of each piece of equipment.

ICT. Pupils to present their tables in a spreadsheet with simple formulas.

C. pupils work closely together to produce table of statistics.

HWK. Complete table of statistics in a graphical manner.

Using data from the table, present the findings as a pictogram. Drawing / writing equipment.

Internet access.

Spreadsheet software.

Stage Six: The pupils will be shown a number of basic designs/ideas for the solution to the design problem. These will be discussed at length with regards to suitability and the pupils will be shown how to set out four ideas. Again the use of basic drawing equipment will be stressed. The basic layout for the design sheet will be explained (standard border line and title block).

The pupils will produce four designs, including detailed notes regarding materials, size, colour, safety etc….

L. Pupils discuss an example of a desk tidy (old fashioned type).

ICT. Pupils draw at least one idea using graphics software.

Using the internet or catalogues etc…. Research existing examples. Present this carefully on paper, including notes. Drawing / writing equipment.

Internet access.

Catalogues.
