Stage One: The pupils will be introduced to the overall project:

A local packaging company has been awarded a contract to supply the packaging to a firm producing boiled sweets for young children (this is a new, sticky, chewy, multi-coloured small sweet. This is an area of the packaging business that has been neglected in recent years and consequently designs are boring and lack inspiration. You are to design and make a package that will increase sales.

L. Pupils will read the design problem and this will be discussed in groups. They will look at existing examples and analyse them for the information they contain.

ICT. Pupils will take turns to word process the problem.

C. What information labels is placed on packages? Recycling etc…..

HWK. Pupils will complete the presentation of the design problem

Collect examples of packages and present them carefully. Example packages.

WP Software.

Drawing and writing equipment.

Stage Two: The pupil will start with a standard border line and title block and produce a rich picture with packaging at its centre. Accuracy and the use of drawing equipment will be emphasised. Effective use of guide-lines will be demonstrated. (Border line and title blocks to be drawn for all pieces of work).

N. Explanation of the use of millimetres rather than centimetres. Explanation of the standard layout of pages.

L. The use of standard text in the title block and spacing of keywords. Keywords given by the pupils.

C. Emphasis on use of rich pictures as one way of thinking through problems.

ICT. Clipart collected for use on rich picture.

HWK. Complete rich picture with careful presentation.

Draw an existing package for a confectionary product. Include details relating to recycling, environment etc….. Example packages.

Internet access for clipart.

Stage Three: The pupils will present the Design Problem/Design Brief uses simple cutting and pasting techniques. The use of card will be demonstrated and craft knifes. Safety will be emphasised at all times. If possible the written work will be word-processed and then pasting techniques can be used to apply it to coloured card. The use of coloured pencils and felt pens to produce a shadow effect and alternatives will be demonstrated.

L. Pupils will discuss a possible design brief in groups. They will look at existing examples.

ICT. Pupils will take turns to word process the brief.

C. Advantages of team work emphasised.

HWK. Pupils will complete the presentation of the design brief.

Select a product and explain how its packaging could be improved. Draw an example of the improved version. Example packages.
