Stage Four: An analysis will be explained and the pupils will use the Letterset books to produce a main title for the package. Colouring techniques will be demonstrated, especially the use of coloured pencils to produce a two tone effect. All printing will be placed between guide-lines. Four ideas to be attempted.

L. Sample product titles and styles will be analysed in groups. The style and impact of the title emphasised.

N. Pupils will measure the height and width of the titles and individual letters. The ratio of the title to the size of the package will also be worked out.

ICT. One idea can be produced using a computer generated font.

HWK. Complete the four ideas and present them graphically.

Cut out and present a number of exiting product titles. Add notes giving your views on each. Internet access to technology website.

ICT Access with DTP software.

Drawing and writing equipment.

Stage Five: The pupils will collect examples of existing packaging and the class will produce a research sheet on printing styles, colours, and the detailed information they include. The pupils will list what they consider to be the most important information.

L. Look at the detailed information and isolate the most important. Discuss.

N. Measure the width and height of ‘tabs’ / glued areas.

Stage Six: The pupils will develop a ‘net’ the package. They will initially work with sample nets. Pupils are expected to produce for examples. Sample colour applied - no need to add colour to the total area. Select the best design and present this graphically with detailed packaging information such as bar codes, manufacturer address etc…..

C. In groups of five or six the pupils will present their design and the group will help in the selection of the best idea for each person. This will be achieved through votes.

ICT. Some printing will be presented through the use of WP/DTP.

N. The cost of manufacture, transport costs and the final selling price will be discussed and roughly worked out.

HWK. Complete four ideas and a final design over a two week period.
