Stage Four: An analysis will be explained and the pupils will use
the Letterset books to produce a main title for the package. Colouring
techniques will be demonstrated, especially the use of coloured pencils to
produce a two tone effect. All printing will be placed between guide-lines.

Sample product titles and styles will be analysed in groups. The style and
impact of the title emphasised.
N.
Pupils will measure the height and width of the titles and individual
letters. The ratio of the title to the size of the package will also be
worked out.

One idea can be produced using a computer generated font.

Complete the four ideas and present them graphically. |
Cut
out and present a number of exiting product titles. Add notes giving your
views on each. |

Stage Five: The pupils will collect examples of existing packaging
and the class will produce a research sheet on printing styles, colours, and
the detailed information they include. The pupils will list what they
consider to be the most important information. |

Look at the detailed information and isolate the most important. Discuss.

Measure the width and height of ‘tabs’ / glued areas.
ICT & N.
On a spreadsheet list the prices of the different products and calculate the
total shopping list.
C.
Ask the group, what makes up a healthy diet? Discuss the health value of the
packages collected.

Present the research sheet. |
Select
a product that you think is badly packaged. Redesign the package keeping in
mind environmental issues such as recycling. |

Stage Six: The pupils will develop a ‘net’ the package. They will
initially work with sample nets. Pupils are expected to produce for
examples. Sample colour applied - no need to add colour to the total area.
Select the best design and present this graphically with detailed packaging
information such as bar codes, manufacturer address etc….. |
C.
In groups of five or six the pupils will present their design and the group
will help in the selection of the best idea for each person. This will be
achieved through votes.
ICT.
Some printing will be presented through the use of WP/DTP.
N.
The cost of manufacture, transport costs and the final selling price will be
discussed and roughly worked out.

Complete four ideas and a final design over a two week period. |
