RESOURCES

Stage Three

The pupils will be directed towards materials research. They will collect information concerning materials it is likely they will use during the project. Presented as a table or similar. Four ideas will be produced including notes.

ICT. Research on the internet in relation to materials and the presentation of ideas.

L. Explanation of the type of notes required alongside ideas.

N. Explanation of voltage ratings for motors and formulas for resistors.

HWK. Present a table of materials research. Produce four annotated ideas.

Research by the internet or other on microprocessor controlled toys and devices. Present this information as a design folder sheet. ICT access.

Internet access.

Drawing and writing equipment.

Photographs of example toys.

Stage Four

The pupils will be shown a simple light/dark sensor. This will be explained through the use of circuit software. The pupils will produce drawings of a crocodile clips and PCB Wizard version of the circuit and explain each of the components. They will use the information sheet for reference.

ICT. Use of crocodile Clips and PCB Wizard.

L. Read through information sheet and make appropriate notes on each component.

N. Work out the value of the resistor through interpreting the coloured bands.

HWK. Complete the circuit sheet.

Research sensor circuits and produce at circuit diagram representing a light sensor and a temperature sensor. ICT access.

Internet access.

Drawing and writing equipment.

Circuit diagrams of sensors - light and temperature.

Stage Five: The pupils will modify design proposals (development of best idea). Appropriate graphics / layout techniques demonstrated. The pupils will be advised to make notes on all design modifications.

ICT & L. Pupils directed towards example development layout on the internet. WP or DTP used to present notes.

N. Overall size of selected design confirmed. Measurements added.

HWK. Over two week period, complete development section.

Research the industrial application of robotics and computer control and present this as a section of research. ICT access.

Internet access.

Drawing and writing equipment.

Development sections from old projects.

Stage Six

Presentation techniques regarding DTP / CAD and hand graphics will be discussed / demonstrated.

The pupils will be encouraged to be inventive and to plan his / her activities using flowcharts, time charts and sequence drawings.

L. Example production plans discussed. Style and wording emphasised.

ICT. Graphics, WP or DTP used where appropriate.

N. Application of flowcharts in other subjects such as maths and science explained.

HWK. Present a flowchart and production sequence drawing of your selected idea.

Research a product of your choice and present information that shows how the product was planned from design to manufacture.

Homework - using the network - pupils complete their presentation.

ICT access.

Internet access.

Drawing and writing equipment.

Development sections from old projects.
