MECHANISMS EXAMINATION QUESTION
V. Ryan © 2004 - 2009 | |
The diagram below shows a design for a simple mechanism which moves piston X forwards and backwards inside the cylinder. It is part of a type of internal combustion engine. |
1. Piston X moves backwards and forwards, what type of motion is this? |
Reciprocating motion | |
2. What is a movable pivot?
The pivot is a centre of movement. A part or point about which something turns.
3. Place labels on the diagram to show the position of two moving pivots.
4. Engineers have found that as the system rotates there is a problem with the mechanism. In the space below describe the problem. |
As the rotating shaft rotates it pushes the rod forwards and backwards. However, eventually the rod smashes against the cylinder and the mechanism stops suddenly.
5. In the space below draw a solution to the problem.
DIAGRAM SHOWING THE PROBLEM |
SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM |
Widen the cylinder, allowing the rod to pass backwards and forwards without 'smashing into the cylinder walls. |
6. Internal combustion engines are linked to pollution. What type of pollution do they create. |
Internal combustion engines emit carbon monoxide and other polluting gases.
