CAR AIR FRESHENERS - FURTHER PREPARATION

V. Ryan © 2004

Car air fresheners are needed to keep the inside of a car smelling fresh. People who smoke inside a car use them as well as people who transport pets. Some people just like their car to nice and fresh inside.

You are to consider the environmental issues relating to designing an air freshener for a car. Consider how you can reduce waste of materials whilst manufacturing (making) and possible recycling of materials. The air freshener is composed of a package and the freshener.

How can waste be reduced?
1. When making the package the development/ net can be set out on card so that each is close to the next. See diagram.
Special software can be used to ensure that each package is laid out on the card to save space. Computer Aided Design (CAD) reduces waste to a minimum.
The machines that cut out the card cut very accurately round the shape of the development / net, again reducing waste.

2. Modern machines are used to cut out the shapes. These are energy efficient and save electricity.

3. The air freshener uses refills, when the perfume is finished it can be replaced with a refill. This means that only the internal part of the air freshener needs replacing, not all of it. This saves materials and reduces the overall cost of the freshener.

Why use recycled materials for the air freshener?
1. Recycled materials can be used for the package. The manufacturer will find that recycled card / paper is cheaper to purchase and this will make the packaging cheaper to make and cheaper for the customer to buy the finished packaged air freshener.
2. Some customers will be attracted to buy the air freshener because it is composed of recycled materials. The product can be labelled environmentally friendly and have the recycling logo on it.
3. Information on the package can emphasis that it is made from renewable materials.

QUESTIONS:
1. Design a net / development for the package. It must be possible to cut several packages from one piece of card, with a minimum of waste.
2. Explain how further waste can be reduced through the use of recycled materials- for the package and freshener.
