LABELLING OF FOODS AND DRINKS

V. Ryan © 2005

Food and drinks packaging displays information for customers. In Britain labelling must be clearly presented under the Food Labelling Regulations of 1996. All printing should be easy to read and should not be obscured by any additional labelling.
The ingredients are listed in order of weight, with the first named ingredient being used the most. On the sample label below, water is the main ingredient. This is normally the case with soft drinks.

Nutritional information is also found on soft drink packaging. This helps the consumer to determine the amount of nutrients in the food they eat and drink. It is also helpful to people on special diets. Storage information and a bar code also included on the packaging.

Bar codes are found on most products. When ‘scanned’ at a Supermarket checkout the price is automatically added to your bill. The Supermarket computer systems also determines if there is a need to automatically reorder the product for the shelves.
