Product analysis involves looking closely at existing products and identifying how they work, the materials they are made from, the industrial processes used to manufacture them and their key features. It may also involves the designer asking the general public or potential customers what they think of the product. The aim of product analysis is to help the designer develop even better designs and products in the future. Study the seating system below.

This public seating system is manufactured entirely from sustainable materials (natural wood).
Ideally, this system would be manufactured from Teak, a wood with a natural resistance to the weather (due to it’s oil content).
Maintenance would be low, as the seats would need a coat of teak oil once a year.

SUITABILITY OF MATERIALS: Almost any natural wood could be used to manufacture this seating system. Teak is ideal due to its natural weather resistance. Pine could also be used, if it is treated to protect it against the elements. The teak can be recycled and if necessary repairs can easily be made.

ERGONOMICS: This system can be set up for different heights, depending on the number of ‘planks / boards’ used. . Also cushions can be added for improved comfort. Some of the seating has a back rest, for improved comfort and ergonomics.

STYLE / AESTHETICS: A modernist and yet environmentally sustainable system. Probably more suitable for the outdoors and yet could be set up indoors, perhaps in a public area of a shopping centre.

WEATHER RESISTANCE: The natural wood can be treated to resist ‘rot’ and damage from the elements. As long as the natural wood is treated every year, the seating system could last for many years.

SUITABILITY FOR ADULTS AND YOUNG CHILDREN: As the seating can be set up at different heights, it is suitable for both adults and young children. The addition of cushions and the existence of back supports, adds to it’s inclusive nature.

EXPANDABILITY: This seating system can be expanded to any size, by simply adding more units / modules
