Square section wood is first prepared, removing the edges with a plane, as shown earlier.

The wood is placed between the two centres (drive centre and live/dead centre). Do not turn on the lathe at this stage.

The measurements are marked on to the wood, using a pencil. A small mark with a HB pencil is all that it required.

Turn the lathe on - the pencil marks can be seen as the work rotates, although not entirely clearly. As the work is turning on the lathe, push the pencil against the wood, on the marks. As the wood rotates the pencil will produce an accurate line all the way round the wood.

Using gouges and chisels and/or scrapers, turn the required shape.
