THE RIP FENCE AND MITRE FENCE

V.Ryan © 2022

The rip fence is used when cutting to a straight line. Some rip fences can be extended, when sawing longer pieces of material.
The fence slides left to right, along the table and can be locked in position. A good quality band saw will be supplied with a fence, that can fit on both the right and left side of the blade.

When the table is set at an angle and locked in position, it is safer to use the fence on the tilted side, because it will support the material. It cannot slip down the slope of the table. (See titled table opposite).
The saw table can tilted and locked in position, up to 45 degrees, allowing a range of angles to be cut by the bandsaw blade.

The mitre fence slides inside the grooves machined into the band saw table. The fence shown opposite, allows the material to be cut from -45 degrees to 90 degree and to +45 degrees. The angle the mitre is set using the protractor scale.

The band saw operator has to decide, which side of the saw blade to set up the mitre fence. The ‘throat distance’ will be the deciding factor in some cases.
