A TYPICAL LATHE TOOL

Lathe tools produce a machined finish. This is commonly seen on ‘turned’ metal. Lathe tools are supplied in a range of shapes and sizes and they are shaped (’ground to shape’) on a grinding machine. Engineers often develop their own shapes, to suit different metals. They all produce a machined finish, which is attractive and often has a specific function.

THE KNURLING TOOL

A knurling tool can be used to produce a range of patterns on round section metal, when using a centre lathe. The example shown opposite, is a diamond pattern. This type of finish is normally found on the handles of products, as the pattern provides a grip. It also looks quite pleasing, as a machined surface.

Milling machines can be used in conjunction with a variety of cutting tools. Often milling tools produce a very accurate and fine circular pattern.

THE SURFACE GRINDER

A surface grinding machine, is used to produce a flat surface accurately, after some machining has already taken place (for example through the use of a vertical miller). A surface grinder is used where absolute precision is required.
As the grinding wheel revolves at high speed, it produces a smooth, flat surface, giving a distinct finish (samples shown below). Although vertical milling machines, horizontal milling machines and shaping machines produce accurate surfaces, if absolute precision is required, a surface grinder is used.
