A very important component on most PICAXE microcontroller circuits is the ‘jumper switch’. This has to be set to a particular position when downloading a programme. Alternatively, the jumper switch must be changed over when using the circuit. The jumper switch is a simple switch used in many electrical devices. For example, computer motherboards often have jumper switches which allow the basic setup of the computer to be altered.

SETTING UP THE JUMPER SWITCH

The jumper switch must be set in the correct position for downloading programmes and for using the PICAXE microcontroller circuit.

The diagram to the left shows the switch set for downloading a programme.

The diagram to the right shows the switch set for operation of the microcontroller circuit.

QUESTIONS:

1. In the space opposite, draw a diagram representing the set up of the jumper switch when downloading a programme is required.

2. Can a PICAXE microcontroller ‘chip’ be programmed in one PICAXE circuit and then placed in another circuit?

Will it work?
