THE PIN VICE

A Pin Vice is a very useful hand tool for a jeweller. It is used to hold small round section material and tools such as deburrers, taps, drills, reamers, scribers, wire and other small tools. The example shown opposite, has knurled surfaces, which provide a secure grip. The three jaw hardened steel keyless chuck, works as an effective clamp, holding the material / tool.

The image shown opposite, shows a small diameter drill bit, set up in a pin vice, ready for use. Rotating the handle with the fingers of one hand and applying a small amount of pressure, provides the force required to drill soft metals. Jewellers often require very small drill bits called needle drills. Needle drills can be purchased or homemade.

To make a needle drill bit, cut off a short piece of steel welding rod.
Place the length of welding rod in the pin vice chuck. The end of the needle / welding rod can be sharpened on an oil stone, forming two flat surfaces .
