The Robotic Buggy - with Light / Dark Sensor and Bulb

V.Ryan © 2005

The robotic buggy seen below is a basic model with the addition of a new input (light/dark sensor) and new output (light bulb). It still has a micro-switch at the front and the back, connected to INPUTS 1 and 3.

THE LIGHT / DARK SENSOR - EXERCISE

For this exercise a light / dark sensor will be added to the front of the buggy. The sensor looks like many of the other Lego bricks but it has two LEDs (lights on one side) - one emits light and the other detects the level of reflected light. In simple terms it detects dark or light.

The buggy below has a light sensor on the front. It has been programmed to move forward until a dark line has been detected, stop for a short time, and reverse until the micro-switch at the back of the RCX buggy is pressed . It repeats this continually (loops).

Remember, even if the motors are set at the same speed, movement in a straight line is virtually impossible. This is because the quality of every motor varies slightly and this affects speed.
