The RCX Brick - Basic Information

V.Ryan © 2005

The RCX brick is the most important part of the robot. Looking closely at the robot, the RCX brick can be seen in the centre. It is the largest part and controls everything that happens.
1. When transmitting a programme from the computer, it is received through the IR receiver at the front of the brick.
2. Micro-switches and light/dark sensors are connected to the INPUTS. These are numbered 1,2 and 3.
3. Motors and lights are connected to the OUTPUTS. These are lettered A, B and C.
4. The RCX brick is powered by battery or a transformer that can be connected to a ‘jack’ plug in the back of the brick.
5. The RCX brick can store up to five programmes. Every time the ‘PRGM’ button is pressed, the RCX moves to the next programme until it eventually returns to programme one.
6. The small screen can be used to view sensor readings and to help select the stored programmes.
7. When the ‘RUN’ button is pressed the RCX runs the selected programme. The ‘VIEW’ button can be used to view sensor readings such as light levels. The ‘ON/OFF’ button turns the RCX on or off.
