A typical pop-up for a greetings card is shown opposite. It is
symmetrical, in that one side is a mirror image of the other side. If
drawing by hand, one side is completed and the opposite side is drawn to
exactly the same size. |
|
The grid system shown opposite is very useful when drawing symmetrical
shapes. If necessary, coordinates (numbers) can be written on the grid,
giving further help when drawing the symmetrical shape accurately. First one side is drawn accurately. Then, using the grid as a guide, and a ruler and pencil, the opposite side can be drawn. The coordinates help ensure that the various heights and widths are the same and that the right and left hand sides line up accurately. |
|
An alternative technique is to use either a ruler or a pair of dividers
(or both). Draw half the pop-up accurately, on the left hand side. Draw faint guidelines across the paper and a centre line, marking the centre of the pop-up (marked with an ‘A’ on the drawing). Measure distances with a ruler or pair of dividers on the left hand side AND transfer them to the right hand side. |
